I was asked on a podcast recently if I had a morning ritual. I’d never been asked this question before, and I answered that I didn’t really have one.
Until I sat on this question for a bit, and realised I definitely do have a morning ritual. It had become such a habit, that I did it without realising, and the more I thought about it, the more I realised that these small habits I was doing day in and day out, were what were setting me up for a successful day.
I get a lot done during my days, and throughout my life, I’ve often been asked how I achieve what I do. I believe it’s because I’m extremely focussed and outcome driven, and I have learnt to master my mornings, so I can master my day. I have a background in health & wellness, so I have accumulated some good habits along the road of life.
So a big shout out to Ian Harding from the Do It For Yourself Podcast, for asking the question, and making me realise that I have implemented something really valuable in my life, and hadn’t even realised it!
So here are my 7 morning habits that allow me to start my day just right, and be in control of my day right from the beginning, so my day doesn’t run me.
1. Wake To Natural Light
I’ve been doing this ever since the end of 2010. For years we had super expensive shades that blocked out every inch of natural light, which meant I woke to a dark bedroom every day no matter the time. So when I found myself suddenly single, the first thing I did was leave my bedroom blind open to wake to natural light, and have done it ever since. Light is important because it serves as the major synchronizer of your “master clock”, and the other biological clocks throughout your body, in turn, synchronize to your master clock.
2. Make The Bed
I cannot walk out of the room in the morning without making the bed. I like structure in my life, as structure is the foundation of freedom (yes, you read that right!).

3. Water With Lemon
I always start the day with a big glass of water with lemon. Lemon juice aids digestion and helps detoxify the liver, and water hydrates your body, fires up your metabolism, helps flush toxins and gives your brain fuel.
Sounds like lemon and water are a pretty good combo to me!
4. Go For A Walk
Once I’ve had my water, I head straight out the door. I love walking in the morning as the sun is rising as it’s such a peaceful time of the day. I use this time to think about what I’m grateful for, and let thoughts wander in and out about the upcoming day – or wherever my thoughts go, actually. If I walk with my husband, we talk about what needs to get done, or unpack problems.
Walking is good for my headspace, and has many benefits which I talk about in episode 9 of the Thought Leaders Business Lab Podcast – What Walking Has Done For My Business.
In the 3 instances I didn’t go for a walk last year, the day was unproductive and lethargic, and I find my mind wandering throughout the day. Don’t underestimate walking!
5. Listen To Audios
I am a massive podcast junkie! And if it’s not podcasts it’s audio books. When I’m not walking and talking in the morning with my husband, I have my ear pods in. If I walk with hubby in the morning, I listen to a podcast episode while I’m having my morning (decaf) coffee before I start the day. I love reading and open a book everyday, but I feel I take in more important facts, figures and important points when I’m listening. Maybe it’s just that the facts are being delivered closer to my brain LOL.
6. Write The Days Goals
Everyday, I write my important tasks on a post-it note, and stick it to the bottom of my iMac screen. These are not the things that are the normal admin and deliverables that have to be done on a daily basis to keep a business running. These are the tasks over and above, that have me pushing ahead and growing my business, every single day. If you’re not implementing anything new, you’re stagnant, and business will be going downhill very quickly.
7. Check In With My Team
Before I start my day, I login to Asana, which is the project management software we use. I look to see where the team is up to from the day before, and delegate and allocate the days tasks. I do this before I begin my day, to ensure the team is looked after and have work to go on with, and so that I can start the day focussed on what I have to do. As the CEO of our company, it’s important that I’m focussed on the big vision, and I can’t do this if my team is pulling my attention too much throughout the day.
What is your morning routine? Do you have one?
I’d love you to share with me below.
