Samantha (00:48):
Welcome to Episode 411 of influence by design. Welcome to Day Four in our 30 of 30, where we’re releasing an episode every day for this month. For the month of September, we’re focusing on the theme of stepping into your power, being the unapologetic leader in your industry, so you can build your elegant empire. So let me share a quick story about the importance of visibility.
Now, I did share this recently on my social media. The block is my favourite reality TV show. Well, we all know it’s not actual reality, but it’s named reality TV. And for those of you that aren’t in Australia, the block is a show where five couples compete against each other to renovate and style houses and sell them at auction for the highest price. Now, I’m sharing this with you because just a few weeks ago, I think it was about four weeks ago, the 2022 season kicked off.
And you would think that you know this is a show about renovating that the contestants would be renovators. Right. Well, some of them are and some of them are tradies. But also there’s an ex AFL player, there was a beauty influencer originally she’s since two part of the show, but she was originally signed up. There’s an actress and a former NRL player split across the teams. So remembering this five teams, two couples, and four of these people are influences with a big, big platform. So why am I telling you this, because they were signed to the show, because they all have large audiences, they have an established platform.
And these contestants will promote the show to their audience and fans and bring them over to the television show to support them. Now, it’s a massive win for the show. It’s a massive win for the TV network. And it’s also a massive win for these influencers or these well known people. Because from this, this will just leverage their platform even more. And you need to apply this same principle as an expert, because having an established platform will open up many of the opportunities that you’re seeking from partnerships to collaborations, media opportunities.
Any opportunity that will enable you to speak to your ideal audience at scale will be so much easier to secure if you’ve got an established platform, either as social media, and most importantly, your email list. Because opportunities of this nature are where the big business growth is most easily achieved. I mean, think about it.
Imagine what would happen to your business. If you were interviewed by Oprah. Anyone that was promoted on Oprah’s book club automatically went to superstar status and went to New York Times best seller. What if you were chosen to speak on a panel with Richard Branson? Many experts that I speak with want these big co lab opportunities that are going to get them the massive exposure and large numbers of subscribers, but they haven’t or aren’t putting in the consistent effort into building their platform.
Samantha (03:50):
So I’ve got a question for you right now, do you feel like the world’s best kept secret? It’s really frustrating when people in your audience that you’ve been helping for years for free, go and pay to work with someone else, especially when you know that they won’t be given the same care and services you would deliver.
Or maybe you’re not getting the opportunities that the other people around you are getting. Now there are many, many reasons for all of this on either of these scenarios. But one of them could be because you’re not top of mind or that people just straight out don’t know you exist. It’s really hard to get the opportunities if no one knows who you are or what you do. So let’s cover some of the reasons why being visible can help grow your brand and your business.
Samantha (04:40):
And number one, as I’ve already talked about, it helps you get exposure to an audience. That’s not just your mom. I mean, mom’s great. My mom’s fabulous. Your mom is probably most likely your biggest supporter, but probably not likely to buy your product. And even if she did one sale isn’t going to help We booked your trip to the Maldives. So you really need to get to grow that audience and to really grow your platform.
Samantha (05:08):
Number two, it helps build your brand awareness so that people don’t just know who you are, but more importantly, how you help them. I see a lot of people on social media that are constantly in my feed, but I still have no idea what they do. So it’s not just about being visible, it’s about being intentionally visible.
Samantha (05:30):
Which leads me to number three, being visible in the right way helps you to establish your credibility and expertise. So for you to attract clients and opportunities, people need to know that you’re the right person for the job, that you’re the one that really knows what you’re talking about, and that you are the absolute right person to be able to help them.
Samantha (05:53):
Number four, it connects you to opportunities that you wouldn’t have had otherwise, if you’re constantly sharing cat memes, or whatever your version of cat memes is, unless you’re a vet specializing in felines, you’re probably not likely to get book filled with your ideal prospects, if you’re not sharing your knowledge and expertise in a way that positions you as the industry leader.
Samantha (06:19):
And number five, being visible allows you to reach and sign more of your champagne clients. It’s that simple. The truth is to be more widely known more people need to know who you are. And for this to happen, you need to be visible all the time you want people to think you’re everywhere.
Samantha (06:37):
Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you are everywhere, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re showing up it live 24/7. But it does mean you need to have a strategy in place to make it look like you’re showing up all the time. So thinking back over the last 90 days, have you been showing up as much as you know you need to be? Or have you procrastinated and been making excuses.
Have you been prioritizing other tasks that have had you hiding behind your laptop screen? Are you on Edit eight of your website, maybe it doesn’t need to happen right now. Now, I’m not here to serve you up a shame sandwich. And I don’t want you to serve one up to yourself either. Because being visible can be really triggering, and it can be really challenging.
Samantha (07:25):
So there are a few reasons why it might be challenging to put yourself out there, you may be new to business. Now I see this a lot with people coming from a corporate career. They’re not used to being the face of the business, and they’re not comfortable marketing and selling themselves. And even though they’re not new to their area of expertise, they’re new to business. And what this new dynamic does is have them feeling really unsure of themselves. Maybe it’s imposter syndrome, or the fear of not being good enough.
Samantha (07:57):
Now I believe that impostor syndrome affects every one of us at one point or another. We’re the most interesting thing that I’ve noticed about impostor syndrome in the time that I’ve been doing this work is that the people who are affected by it the most are the ones that are highly knowledgeable in their field. This is because the more you know, the more you realize there is to know. And if you haven’t heard of the Dunning Kruger effect, look it up. It’s really great information. And essentially, it’s the effect where the more you know about a subject, the more you realize there is still to know, as opposed to those with a limited knowledge who overestimate their competence.
Samantha (08:40):
So the people that are like, you know, in the first four weeks of a job, and they think they know everything. Now impostor syndrome can be particularly difficult to navigate. If you’re transitioning from employee to entrepreneur, or from one niche to another, or when you’re going to the next level, you know, new level new devil, it can be really challenging. But there are ways to deal with this. And we’re going to cover those in other episodes. Maybe you have past experiences about being seen and heard that trigger you. Now these fears can really read their ugly head as you step into the spotlight and put yourself in a vulnerable position with a fear that these past experiences are going to happen again. And finally, we’ve got all these stories going on in our head. Oh, my website’s not good enough. My branding isn’t professional enough.
Samantha (09:33):
I’ll show up when I lose a few more pounds. It doesn’t matter what the story is. They actually are all stories. But here’s the thing. No matter what level you’re at, there’s always going to be something that has the potential to derail you. But you have the choice to either let that happen and use it as an excuse or to dive into your little black bag of resources and do the work you need to do to keep showing up so
Samantha (10:00):
So what can you do to show up more? This is really important. You need to know where you’re heading. And you need to know why. Why do you do what you do? Why is it important? And who needs to see and hear your message.
Samantha (10:18):
But if there’s one thing I want to leave you with today, it’s this. If you don’t show up, who are you letting down? Whether it’s your goal to impact millions, or if it’s being the role model to show your children that they can achieve anything they set their mind to, it doesn’t matter as long as it’s important to you. But most importantly, I don’t want to see you let yourself down. Because you have been chosen to be here at this very moment in time to live your purpose and make the world a better place.
