Samantha (00:50):
Welcome to Episode 432 of Influence By Design in our 30 of 30, where we’re releasing an episode every day for this month of September, we’re focusing on the theme of stepping into your power, being the unapologetic leader in your industry so you can build your elegant empire.
Now today, I’m going to start with a big bold statement. Today’s episode is not for everybody. It’s not for people who aren’t prepared to put in the work to create a killer personal brand. But if you want to be known as the industry leader, and you’re prepared to step into the arena, this episode is for you.
Samantha (01:28):
Now, let me just share a story. This is one of my favourite stories with one of my favourite people. Back in 2010, there was a TED Talk that absolutely blew up. It was a talk on shame and vulnerability. And at the time, most of us hadn’t heard of the particular speaker that I’m talking about. She has since gone on to do another TED Talk, write several best-selling books, speak on stages, and consultant huge companies all over the world. She has a Netflix special and is a regular guest of Oprah Winfrey’s and of course, you all know, it’s Brene Brown.
So of all of those platforms that she used to build her brand, which one is the best? Well, the speaker coaches will tell you that at speaking from stage, the book writing coaches will tell you it’s writing your book. And the YouTube coaches will tell you it’s building a YouTube channel. And they’re all right.
Samantha (02:22):
But none of these platforms is where you begin. All of these platforms are great. But there’s one important piece of the puzzle that you need to start with to build out a personal brand, that will give you the greatest chance of success. And that is having one brand message.
So the first thing I want you to understand is your personal brand needs to be built out as an ecosystem with one brand message as the golden thread that weaves everything together. Think of the centre of the ecosystem as being the one thing you want to be known for.
As a coach, I know you’re able to help many different people with many different problems. That’s what coaches do. But if you wrote a book on how to have a loving relationship with your spouse, if you had a keynote on how to build an offshore team, and you had a podcast on your travel adventures, whilst you’d most probably attract a small audience for each of those platforms, you won’t be reinforcing your expert positioning and status as the authority in your field.
Samantha (03:25):
Your personal brand needs to be built on the foundation of that one message. And then you need to build out your entire personal brand ecosystem so that your results will exponentially increase. It’s kind of like compound interest.
And before you say but Sam, Tony Robbins. He’s got many topics, and he does. But he began creating his brand around success mindset back in 1977, when he started promoting Jim Rohn seminars that’s 45 years ago. And he began with that one brand message and has spent time building his audience and positioning. And he was able to add on topics as he went along.
So yes, you can do that. But you first must really create this strong personal brand with one brand message.
Samantha (04:17):
So the second thing I wanted to dive into here is the difference between strategy and tactics. Now think about tactics like separate pieces of the pie, like writing a book. And I’ve seen many coaches write a book to try and build their audience. And while writing a book is one of the essential parts of being known as an industry leader. They’ve gone on and just written any book without understanding how it fits into their entire brand.
So think about your brand message as being the center of the ecosystem. And you’re speaking and your book and your podcast, your content marketing, your offers in your programs are all aligning directly with that one message, and all of the things that need to be talked about in each of those pieces lead into those offers and programs. They’re not all separate tactics.
Samantha (05:11):
And number three, I really want you to understand that if you want to be known as the leader in your industry, you need to commit to the long game. When you’re adding in each piece of your pie or the separate pieces of your strategy, you need to consider that you’ll be adding each piece. And I would suggest thinking about it in the terms of let’s just give this a go for 12 months and see what happens.
Now, obviously, if something isn’t working, you don’t want to continue wasting time and energy, and resources with that strategy. But you do need to give it enough time to build your audience, get the data and optimize it.
If we show up once you’ll create a small impact on a small group of people. If you continue to show up consistently, you’ll build your platform and impact with a much larger group of people. And like I was talking about before, it’s like compound interest, those people that are listening or watching you or reading or seeing you on one of your platforms will move to another platform to follow you further, and it exponentially increases.
Samantha (06:19):
Now the number of listeners that we have for this podcast is much larger than it was back when I began podcasting in 2016. Now I could have quit in the first couple of months back then. But I wouldn’t be making the impact I’m making now that I’ve put in the consistent effort of publishing over 400 episodes, and making tweaks and changes, and altering my strategy along the way to make it even better.
So I want you to really understand that to be the leader in your industry, you do need to be prolific. But you can’t do this by flippantly adding tactic after tactic starting something new at the beginning of each month and stopping before at the end of the month. Because it’s not working.
You need to have a strategy of how it all fits together. You need to know what you want to be known for and you need to settle in for the long game. And if you do these three things, you will reap the rewards and you will build a successful and a solid brand.
