Starting a podcast has been one of the best things I’ve ever done in my business.
But I speak to so many people who want to start a podcast and don’t, because they think it’s too late to start a podcast in 2020.
I’ve been podcasting since early 2016, as well as consuming over a dozen shows each week – I absolutely love the platform! My original show (which I retired) was called Unlimited Influence, and I’ve since published over 150 episodes on my current show Thought Leaders Business Lab. I’ve also just started a panel show with Jennifer Crawford and Joe Pardo called Business Geeks.
Podcasting has played a big part in our business growth, and is a large part of our content marketing strategy.
Why is it such a large part of our marketing strategy?
Well there are many reasons, but here is my top five:
1. There are just over 700,000 active podcasts.
Compare this to over 500 million YouTube channels and 500 million blogs, nothing more needs to be said here…
2. 80% of listeners listen to an entire podcast episode.
With the average podcast episode being 43 minutes, this is a fabulous opportunity for the listener to really get to know you and your depth of expertise.
3. Podcast consumption has continually been on the rise, year on year since 2009.
For comparison purposes, nearly FOUR TIMES more people listen to podcasts every week than watched the Game of Thrones final season premiere (and you thought everyone watched GOT!)
4. Podcast listeners are an affluent group.
In the United States overall, 29% of households earn $75,000 per year and above, and among podcast listeners, it’s 41%.
5. Through hosting my podcasts, I’ve been able to interview hundreds of experts and learn so much from them.
Add to that I’ve had the opportunity to interview some of my business idols who I may never have had the chance to connect with (and especially not get to chat with them 1:1 for nearly an hour). I have grown my professional exponentially by producing a podcast.
So if you love to connect with people, you are uplifted by having inspiring conversations, and you have a message worth sharing, then podcasting could be the platform for you.
